What financial assistance is available?

All EU Nationals on an Erasmus Programme are eligible for a grant - irrespective of parent's earnings and Local Authority grants. However, the grant must not be used to cover costs already supported by other European Community funds.

The minimum period of study is 3 months, maximum 10 months.

How & When would I receive any money?

The Erasmus grant is paid out in two instalments:

  • in September
  • in April/May

The UK National Agency council keep a percentage of the UK's grant allocation in hand in case extra students want to go abroad after the initial money has been allocated. In April / May, when the final number of outgoing UK students are known and if money is still available, a second payment is made.

The money is paid directly into your bank account in pounds sterling.

Tuition Fees

Students on an Erasmus exchange programme:

Eligible undergraduate home-fee students spending a whole year abroad under the ERASMUS scheme do not pay the tuition fee for that academic year, if they have applied to their LEA for financial support.

If your period of study abroad is less than an academic year (e.g. a term) you will be required to pay 100% of the regular tuition fee.

NB. NO TUITION FEE WILL BE CHARGED BY THE HOST INSTITUTION ABROAD IF STUDYING THROUGH AN EXCHANGE AGREEMENT.

Home-fee paying students on the Assistante scheme or a work placement

If you are participating in a work placement / Assistante scheme as part of your degree programme for a full year the University will charge 50% of your tuition fee during the year you are abroad.

Full International fee paying students:

This applies to full international fee paying students who are participating on a full year Erasmus exchange (but are not eligible for an Erasmus grant), students studying outside the EU on a university exchange programme for a full academic year and students participating in a full year work placement as part of their Reading degree programme, the University will charge 20% of your tuition fee during the year you are abroad.

LEA grant

It would be as well to check with your LEA or to warn your parents, if they pay your maintenance, that your cost of living will be increasing. If your study period abroad is an integral part of your degree at Reading, your loan may be increased for that period. For more detailed please consult with Student Services.
