Information
"... this year has been wonderful
for me in so any ways. Living abroad has given me new perspectives on things,
allowed
me to discover a new culture first hand, has improved my language skills in
a way that no classes back home could, and given me the pleasure of meeting
and making new friends..."
Alain Barbasiewicz, French (Single
Honours) Montpellier, France.
Eligibility
If you are a registered student at
the University of
Reading, you could be entitled to study abroad for a period of time. Some courses
have a compulsory year abroad as part of your degree
programme. If your course does not have a year abroad option, you may still
study abroad, providing that the work carried out is accepted by your Department.
When to go
Undergraduates usually go abroad in the 2nd or
3rd year of their degree.
There are also opportunities for postgraduates to spend part of their degree
studying or doing research at one of our partner Universities.
When you go will depend on the
semester dates of the institution you will be studying. For instance some
European universities hold language classes in September and Australian
university's start their academic year in July.
Opportunities available depend on the links
your department has with partner institutions.
Academic Requirements
The Erasmus rules require "full recognition of the study abroad period
towards the home degree", and this rule generally applies to whether you
are studying in Europe, North America or Australia. This means that your programme of study in the host
country must be carefully worked out before you leave Reading. Both you
and your departmental supervisor must be clear that your study abroad will be accepted on your
return to Reading and that the appropriate subject areas will be available when you
arrive abroad.
As an undergraduate student you must achieve the equivalent of either 20
ECTS for one term, 40 ECTS for two terms or 60 ECTS for a full academic year.
Failure to do so could jeopardise your academic status and your funding!
Information on available courses should be obtained from the programme
co-ordinator in your department.
