Documentation
Although by no means exhaustive, this is the
documentation we consider you you will need
- Passport
- Visa (if appropriate)
- Letter from Host University Confirming Acceptance
- Proof of registration at The University of Reading
- Insurance
- Health Cover
- Medical Insurance (non EU)
Passport
Make sure your passport has longer than 6 months at the
end of your stay before
it expires as you may experience problems otherwise. We advise to photocopy the
key pages of your passport and keep these in a separate place. Along with an ISIC
Card (International Student Card), your passport can also act as a form of identification. Being able to
prove your identity is important as many countries expect citizens to carry some
form of identification with them at all times.
Visa
Please seek advice from the University at which you
will be studying to whether you will need a visa to enter the country. The
Student's Union will also be able to provide up-to-date advise about visas.
The Foreign Office website (www.fco.gov.uk)
will provide up-to-date information on the country you are visiting.
Letter
It is always best to
ensure that you have the letter of formal acceptance from the host institution
when you arrive. it is likely to speed up the registration process and will be
proof that you are studying at the Institution should you need to demonstrate
that you are studying there.
Proof of Registration
You will have to be able to provide proof on your
arrival at the institution where you are studying that you are a full time
student at the University of Reading. Student Services will be able to provide
you with this. They are situated on the second floor of Whiteknights House, but
please only go and see them if you have been formally accepted by the host
institution.
Insurance
Students travelling abroad as part of their studies are
covered by the University travel insurance scheme. Please refer to
http://www.rdg.ac.uk/insurance for further information (see 'Business
travel' section).
Health Cover
Health cover is provided by the European
Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The EHIC card will provide students with access to
reduced-cost, sometimes free, medical treatment that becomes necessary
during a temporary visit to most European countries. It will cover them
for state-provided treatment only, and they will receive treatment on
the same terms as ‘insured’ residents of the country they are visiting.
Other benefits for students include peace of mind whilst studying
overseas, no medical costs to pay up-front and possible savings on
excess for insurance claims. It may also be a standard pre-requisite of
travel insurance and a condition of application to an institution.
Further information can be accessed from:
www.dh.gov.uk/PolicyAndGuidance/HealthAdviceForTravellers/fs/en (open in new window)
Students should apply for the new EHIC via the
following methods:-
* Online at
www.ehic.org.uk -
you need your National Insurance Number.
* By calling EHIC Applications on 0845 606 2030 (cards will be
delivered within 10 days)
* By post, using the application form and pre-addressed envelope
available at the Post Office (cards will be delivered within 21
days)
The Department of Health recommends that
online application is the quickest and most efficient method.
This information is of particular interest to students who are studying, or
intend to study, in any of the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus
(not North Cyprus), Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany,
Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania,
Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia,

Medical Insurance
If you are travelling outside the EU we advise that you
contact your host institution and seek advice about what medical insurance is
required and find out whether the University of Reading insurance coverage is
sufficient.
