Research
The Department of German Studies offers modules towards the M. Res. course
put on by the School of Languages and European Studies. However you may prefer to work on a longer piece of independent research and study for an M.Phil degree (one year) or a PhD degree (three years). In this case you should contact the Head of Department,
Dr I.F.Roe, to discuss which member of staff would be best suited to act as a supervisor. A list of theses recently completed and others currently in progress can be seen below.
Each year the faculty and/or School offers a number of scholarships and
bursaries which cover both PhD tuition fees and maintenance. For funding
opportunities, see the School's
Postgraduate
Awards page
The main focus of this department's research is related to the Centre for East German Studies (CEGS), a centre of advanced study and research into the politics and culture of the former GDR and post-unification East Germany. The centre has its own
web-page listing details of readings, conferences and publications related to its activities.
Our staff, however, have research interests in a wide range of other areas, including post-war German fiction and lyric poetry and 19th Century German and Austrian drama.
